For those of you who follow our Holidailies posts each
December, you’ve seen me talk about my mantra above. And today just happens to be Giving Tuesday
so I thought it worth a re-mention.
My family celebrates both Hanukkah and Christmas so as you
can imagine, the gift giving is Olympic-level.
Nonetheless, in an effort not to raise incredibly spoiled kids, my
husband and I devised a system where we do specific things each night for
Hanukkah, with one night being an opportunity for the kids to give back. This means they donate money to a charity of
their choice. Over the years, they have
donated money to National Parks, organizations that provide instruments to children,
“adopted” Florida manatees and African elephants, their grandparents’ church,
dogs for Veteran’s, etc.
Each year, we give them suggestions of organizations based
on what has gone on in their lives personally over the last year. Sometimes they take those suggestions;
sometimes they come up with their own.
In any case, for at least one night, they are thinking about the world
around them. And dare I say, I think
they have actually grown to like this.
So since it is Giving Tuesday and all, I decided to share
with you some of the organizations I will be suggesting the kids consider
donating to this year. Please take a
moment to consider giving to these groups or wherever makes *you* feel good!
