Song For The Day

In their song, “Sing for the Day,” Styx told us to

Sing for the day
Sing for the moment
Sing for the time of your life

For those familiar with Happy Days, you’ll recall the song’s opening lyrics:

Sunday Monday happy days
Tuesday Wednesday happy days
Thursday Friday happy days
Saturday, what a day
Rockin' all week for you

This got me wondering if there were songs about all of the days of the week.

Quite a number of artists helped us start the week with Sunday songs.  Maroon 5 woke up on “Sunday Morning,” Scorpions found themselves “Loving You Sunday Morning,” Joe Jackson read the “Sunday Papers,” and Queen enjoyed themselves “Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon.”  Most famously U2 gave us “Sunday Bloody Sunday.”

A lot of people told us in song that they don’t have a high opinion of Mondays.  Most memorably, The Mamas & the Papas sang “Monday, Monday”, The Bangles fretted having a “Manic Monday”, The Boomtown Rats told us “I Don’t Like Mondays”, Duran Duran spotted a “New Moon on Monday” and we’ve heard that “Rainy Days and Mondays” always got The Carpenters down.

The pickings are slimmer when it comes to Tuesday.  We can work through the whole day with The Pogues singing about “Tuesday Morning”, The Moody Blues about “Tuesday Afternoon”, Josh Abbott Band handled “Tuesday Night” and for good measure, Lynyrd Skynyrd told us that “Tuesday’s Gone”.  Most famously, The Rolling Stones gave us “Ruby Tuesday”.

By hump day, the shelves are nearly bare.  Macklemore & Ryan Lewis gave us “Wednesday Morning” and Johnny Cash had “A Wednesday Car.”  The Guess Who had “A Wednesday in Your Garden” but they must’ve been lonely because there were not a lot of others out there singing about Wednesday.

Fear not my Wednesday friends, you are not the bleakest of days when it comes to song inspiration.  There were “Thursday” songs by Jim Croce and Pet Shop Boys, Donovan had a “Jersey Thursday” back in 1965 and David Bowie birthed “Thursday’s Child” but after that, the number of songs drops dramatically and I never heard of most of the artists who sang them.

Way more artists found the start of the weekend inspiring.  From “Thank God It’s Friday” by Love & Kisses and “Friday I’m In Love” by the Cure to Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.).  Interestingly, the interweb says that if you don’t require Friday to be in the title of the song, you’ll find many, many additional songs about that day of the week.

Not surprisingly, Saturday wears the crown for the day of the week with the most songs about it.  There are “Saturday Night” songs by everyone from the Bay City Rollers, to Khalid, to Frank Sinatra.  Chicago spent “Saturday In The Park”, Sam Cooke gave us “Another Saturday Night” and Elton John famously told us that “Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting”.
